Session descriptions:

Ready, Set, Rebozo – Top Ten Rebozo Techniques

For many years, in cultures around the world, rebozos have been used by birthing women and their support team to help pregnant and birthing women to feel more comfortable, relax, help position babies, ease labor and back pains, conserve mother's energy and care for a newborn. It can be a great tool for doulas and midwives, making it easier to support laboring women while reducing physical impact on the birth professional's body!

Learn about the history of the rebozo, how to introduce it to your client or CBE student in a prenatal, CBE class or the birth space, and how to use a rebozo prenatally, in the postpartum period as well as during the different phases and stages of labor. Learn all the doula tips for saving your energy and your back while helping the birthing woman get into positions that promote labor, encourage well positioned babies and reduce pain. This hands on class will leave you excited to try out the many rebozo uses during your next birth and share what you know with your clients, as you make a positive impact on their birth experience. Get up and out of your seat and "Ready, Set, Rebozo!"

Actual learning objectives:

Recognize the rich history of the rebozo in many cultures around the world and explain to clients, students and HCPs the purpose of the rebozo and how it can help facilitate the birth process.

Demonstrate rebozo use to clients during a prenatal or class to relieve pregnancy discomforts and prepare for labor.

Discover techniques and tips for pregnancy, labor and birth that save the partner/doula’s energy and back and provide comfort to the mother.

Apply rebozo strategies to help promote labor, encourage well-positioned babies and relieve mother’s overall pain and back pain.

Demonstrate to new parents how the rebozo can be used during the postpartum period and in babywearing.

TENS in the Toolbox

A TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a common tool long used to help with the pain of childbirth across Europe. Learn how to add this tool/skill to your doula toolbox and help your clients to reduce labor pain, especially the pain of back labor. Get a chance to try a unit on yourself, learn the proper protocols on safe use, how to introduce it to your clients and their providers and if you wish, purchase your own unit for use with your clients after the training.

Obstetric TENS has been found to be an effective technique for pain control in over 80 percent of births. Many studies have been done in Europe with marked success, especially for back pain in labor. This is a great addition to your doula skill set and will increase client satisfaction and reduce pain, quickly becoming one of your favorite methods for helping your clients cope and handle childbirth pain, especially that dreaded back labor!

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, the learner will be able to:

1.   Describe theories explaining the physiological mechanisms of pain relief with TENS.

2.   Discuss research findings on pain relief, safety, and women’s satisfaction with TENS during labor

3.   Demonstrate the proper application of TENS.

4.   List the parts of a TENS unit.

5.   Describe the physical sensations caused by TENS.

6.   Discuss precautions and reasons for the precautions with the use of TENS.

7.   Describe the requirements for DONA certification in the use of TENS.

8.   Discuss a step-by-step protocol for the implementation of TENS by the doula.

Working with VBAC Clients; Supporting the Journey, Avoiding the Obstacles.

With the cesarean rate approaching 33% in 2013, more and more women find themselves with fewer options for a vaginal birth after a cesarean. Having a doula with VBAC knowledge can really help a woman navigate the choices and obstacles that may come up as she plans for a VBAC.

At the end of this very timely ADT, participants will be able to:

Identify the characteristics of  "VBAC Friendly" providers and facilities in our community

Accurately understand the true risks of VBAC and Repeat Cesarean Section to both mom and baby

Become familiar with current hospital protocols and community standards for VBAC'ing moms

Receive suggestions for work that can be done prenatally with your client to help her achieve her goal of a vaginal birth

Strategize techniques for labor to help with both emotional and physiological dystocia

Create a resource list for both Cesarean and VBAC clients

Debrief the birth experience effectively with your client in a postpartum visit, whether it is a successful vbac or a repeat cesarean.
